"What's going on here?" you ask? The short answer is, this site aims to improve on-line communities with a free service (hopefully serviceS soon!).

For the long answer, I'll give a quick blurb about me. I've been a strong supporter of the Open Source community for several years now. In fact, my fantasy job would be to work full-time on a great OS project (preferably phpBB Razz ).

I owned and operated an ISP for 9 years, and this month I'm cashing in my chips before dial up completely dries up. Having never held a "real" job before, I now find myself unemployed and searching for the next thing. Being a code monkey at heart, that probably meant finding a job as a software engineer, writing code to profit someone else's biz. Obviously that goes against my entrepreneurial nature Very Happy

My wife and I, with our 11 month old, quickly realized that being home all the time was great! My wife kiddingly said, "you should figure out a way to work from home ALL the time." Within one hour I had come up with the idea for Spelling Cow.

Being involved with phpBB as MOD Team Leader has given me great insight as to what is both lacking and desired by on-line communities. In short, they want features and don't want to pay for them Razz Fortunately they don't mind unobtrusive ads and will even click on one from time to time.

Thus, it is my hope that I can scratch out a living, provide some great services, and maybe I'll some time even be able to pitch in at phpBB full-time Wink That's the goal and that's where we are going.

Thanks for supporting Spelling Cow!

Hi ET Wink Glad to see you tracked me down Very Happy Nope, dream job turned out to not be so dreamy after all so that is behind me now.

As for the ISP I used to own, it was www.netway.com Don't mess with them though since I still need them Wink

Well, the 26th will be one month since this website became public knowledge. Time to write down some things before I forget them! Now that things have settled down a bit, I'm hoping to keep a bit of a blog.

May 8: came up with the idea, as I mentioned in the first post
May 9: after doing research all night, started development
May 10: had basics working
May 11: had proof of concept working... decided to go for it!
May 14: registered www.spellingcow.com Very Happy
May 14: suspended things for a Cincinnati trip to see sister-in-law Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
May 15: Holiday Inn Express in Toronto has broadband access!! Yay! Very Happy
May 16: Ready to test on server! Test was a complete... FAILURE Shocked
May 16: Wife, son, and I saw the Sox play the Blue Jays! Awesome time but Sox lost.
May 17: In Cinci... things not too bad, sneaking some Dev time
May 18: Figured the failure was a javascript access violation, working on alt methods
May 20: Blah, having to use slow dial-up access to do research Rolling Eyes
May 21: Got the client-side web scraper working... should work but can't test until I get home
May 22: Driving all night to get home (14 hours) so baby will sleep...
May 23: ...tired!! Razz Home! Mr. Green Tired! Confused Can't sleep Evil or Very Mad Web scraper works!! Mr. Green Sleep now Wink
May 23: After napping... SpellingCow website is born!
May 24: Got Google Ads working
May 26: Beta is installed and announced on www.blizzhackers.com ... hello world!
June 2: 2nd beta released, things are starting to take shape!
June 7: been bogged down with a project for phpBB.com... sucking me dry... finally done! Very Happy
June 8: One month since I first got the idea, resuming work on project!
June 19: been working constantly, and things are quite spiffy. Decided this will be 1.0.0 instead of 0.2.0
June 22: released 1.0.0!!! Much rejoicing!
June 24: still waiting for BH to load up the new version. 5 sites using new version now:
andaluciaprojects.com/phpBB2
www.sogland.com/forums
dk.superfastbuys.com/forum
re-web.co.uk/fataldesire
AND www.spellingcow.com of course Wink

Thoughts: LOVING working from home. Will talk more about that later.
