v1.0.0
Wow! Anyone that knows me, knows that I'm not famous for releasing programs that actually reach v1.0.0 Laughing So this is indeed a very proud moment for me. The highlights of the project are:

* Ridiculously easy installation that will work for any web form!!
* Personal and portable dictionaries, usable from ANY site running SpellingCow!
* Optional ability to auto check prior to posting

Go get it!!..... download

The new version adds several features:
  • Personal and portable dictionaries that are recalled for every site that has SpellingCow installed!
  • Store personal settings that will be recalled for every site that has SpellingCow installed!
  • Site Admin designation
  • Admin controlled site-wide dictionary additions.
  • Database storage to reduce bandwidth resources
  • Comprehensive authentication system allows for login, logout, register an account, send forgotten passwords, and retain personal settings.
  • Comprehensive attention to security to protect sensitive data being spell checked
  • An optional phpBB MOD to allow automatic spell checking prior to posting, much like email. If no errors are found, then the post is submitted immediately, with no screen displayed.

Existing Features:
  • Super-duper easy install that should work on ALL PHP enabled servers. Just edit one file to add a single block of code, and place the gateway file on your server. SpellingCow handles the rest!
  • The checker will work on ANY web form, not just phpBB or other forum software. Use for bloggers, webmail, guestbooks or any time users are entering data!
  • The defacto change, change all, ignore, and ignore all features
  • When done checking, options to return to editing, cancel, or automatically submit the form right from the checker!
  • Quick Dictionary and Thesaurus lookups provided by Merriam-Webster.com
  • Immediate highlighting of all misspelled words. Suggestions provided.
  • Quickly skip ahead in checking by clicking any misspelled word.
  • Installation instructions for vBulletin, Invision Power Board, Webmail, and more coming ASAP!

Planned in the VERY near future:
  • ALL of these additions will be server side, and not require ANY modifications to existing installations!
  • Multilingual support for 36 dialects and languages (ie. US English, UK English, Canadian English, Spanish, French, etc.)
  • Support multiple form items! (ie. check the post message AND subject and anything else that you desire!)
  • Undo option
  • Recheck message option
  • Expanded checking options (ie. skip words in all caps, and many more options)

Features coming soon:
  • Grammar checking
  • In-line thesaurus
  • Some things so juicy I must keep them secret!!

Congrats on a job well done! Laughing

I have fully installed it with auto spell check. Is there any way to make it so that the spell check window don't open if there is no typos? (Like have it check in the background and only pop-up a window if typo is found?)

The reason I ask is because after the window opened and closed real quick, It took a sec at the submit screen. I almost clicked submit again. I think this may cause a lot of double posting?

EDIT: On a side now, I took a look at spell-gw.php
I noticed there is one line that is suppose to be configured in it (for ADMIN_USERNAME)
I didn't see it mentioned in the install scripts at all.

EDIT 2: Found a bug I think! When I click "ADD" in the spell checker at my site it complains I must be logged in even though I am logged in. This happens here as well so I don't think its a mis-installation issue.

I do not think you can have it not pop up without a lot of editing... I suppose its possible, you would have to actually send all data from the newthread.php//newpost.php page, and if it returns an error, you pop up the box, but it would require a lot of forum page editing, making it a) a lot harder to install, and b) a lot more forum specific, if nutzzy99 doesn't have any ideas.. or doesn't mind it, i wouldn't mind helping you edit it, i think i could get it to work, but it just doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do by default.

Wohoo! I'll stop by your site and check it out! As for the window, I don't see a good way of getting around it at the moment. Best thing would probably to the window clearly say it's spell checking. For me it only flashes on the screen for a sec if there are no errors.

Nope, should not cause double posting for a couple reasons. 1) you can only open the spelling window one time, so if you did click it again, it will just reinit the window. The window is what control the submit, so if it is not given time to complete, it won't do the submit. 2) there is flood control already built in to most forums.

Hrmmm... the directions are on the screen for viewing the site-wide dictionary. But they should also be put into the install directions. Thanks!

If it still says "login to spellingcow" at the top of the window, then you are not logged in as far as the spell checker is concerned. I should make the error message more clear that you must be logged in to spellingcow via the checker.

Thanks and keep the feedback coming!!

Hmm, My Internet Explorer crashed with a debug error when I posted that last post. I didn't catch it though.. Seems like only a one time thing (some freak mistake).

Made a minor revisions called v1.0.1.

All the changes are server side, so there is no upgrade to download. The minor changes are as follows:
  • the main spell checking page is now Valid HTML 4.01 Transitional (well mostly Wink)
  • fixed a bug when processing the a misspelled word at the very start of a message - empty() vs. isset()
  • added some browser/OS detection to increase browser compatibility
  • spruced up the ad space a little, but needs much more work.
  • changed error message to reflect possible blocking cookie issue
  • specified that "logged in" means logging in to SpellingCow!
  • fixed a registration bug involving gen_rand_string()

FYI, updated the "you must be logged in message" to specify logged into Spelling Cow via the checker Wink

LOL, ok Smile

I recently converted a themed php-nuke site to be Valid HTML 4.01 Transitional. It shocks me as how php-nuke throws in the w3 tag even though its not even valid on a stock install. Some of those errors can be a real pain!

You said yours is mostly, Which were you not able to fix?

Code:
<body class=bodytop marginheight=0 marginwidth=0 topmargin=0 leftmargin=0 rightmargin=0 bottommargin=0>
None of the margin stuff is supposedly compliant. However, it is recognized by all 4 browsers I tested on and it does help things look nicer in all 4. It gets rid of the little bit of padding at the top and sides of the screen. Should not be a problem if a browser doesn't recognize them either.

Do you actually need to specify all the margins? I think they all default at 0 anyways and if they are not specified it won't hurt anything. If I am correct you can just remove all that margin stuff with no ill affect. If I am not, Then all this should work:

It should look similar to this: (not sure what you have bodytop but just add it with whatever you have in it)

BODYTOP {
line-height: 0px;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-left: 0px;
margin-right: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
}

change:
<body class=bodytop marginheight=0 marginwidth=0 topmargin=0 leftmargin=0 rightmargin=0 bottommargin=0>

to:
<body class=bodytop>

------------------------
I couldn't find one for marginwidth. Hope its not required Sad

Looks like the CSS stuff does work on my Dev machine. Will do some testing on other browsers and then load it up. BTW, here's what it looks like with the margins defined....

and without...

...especially look at the green bar where it says welcome back. You can see it (and everything else) is shifted down and to the right.
