|
|
This list I made because I have clients in the UK, who do not like the fact that us Americans don't spell words the way they do! So I made a list of common words (US english)(tab)(UK english)!
All the words are spelled correctly, it is used to do a 'auto change' of words from (US_ENG -> UK_ENG) or (US ENG <- UK ENG)...
The things we must do to keep people happy, );

Remember that the proper ISO language codes are en_US and en_GB. Also, the underscore (_) is usually interchangeable with a hyphen (-), as in en-US.
EDIT: I have a full list of these ISO codes, if you need them. They are sorted by code, and have the accompanying language name next to them. _________________ Gordon P. Hemsley

That is pretty cool, and I applaud meme's efforts.
| Quote: | | All the words are spelled correctly |
Not quite. Are you sure there's such a word as 'councellor'?
| Quote: | councellor counsellor
councelor counsellor
counselor counsellor
counselors counsellors |
I think perhaps what was intended here is
councilor councillor
councilors councillors
counselor counsellor
counselors counsellors
| Quote: | | enrollments enrolment |
Should, of course, read
enrollments enrolments
Both 'unenrol' and 'unenroll' are incorrect. The correct US form is 'disenroll', and the UK form is 'disenrol'. Also, of course, 'unenrolls unnrols' should be 'disenrolls disenrols'.
There's a 'checkbook' and a 'chequebook' in the list, but no 'cheque' or 'cheques', and 'centermost centremost' should, strictly speaking, be 'center-most centre-most'. Spelling cow doesn't recognise 'honorless' or 'honourless'.... I think perhaps 'honorless' and 'honor-less' are equally acceptable in the US, but I'm not sure that this word even exists in British English.
'Skillfulness' is a ridiculous word, IMHO, and there is no such word as 'skilfulness' as far as I'm aware. A Brit should just use 'skill'. Also, 'sympathisingly' should be 'sympathetically'.
There are several other errors in meme's list, on the US side.... most (if not all) of the other UK spellings are correct, but if Spelling Cow doesn't recognise some of the American spellings, it's probably because they're wrong (all the 'synchronize' and 'miniaturize' variations, for example, are misspelt), with the possible exceptions of 'honorless', 'reinstallment', 'subcenter' and 'unicolor'.
Some additions - Brits can legitimately use 'spelt' for 'spelled', 'misspelt' for 'misspelled' and 'dreamt' (pronounced dremt) for 'dreamed'. These variations are interchangeable. Other omissions from meme's list include 'unflavoured' and 'dishonourably'.
UK English uses 'programme' where US English would use 'program', except when referring to a computer program, which is still 'program' in UK English, the spelling having presumably been adopted from the American, which leaves me a little unsure as to the legitimacy of 'vapourware'.
This it what we Brits refer to as 'Americanisation', though you guys would doubtlessly spell it wrong....

| I am also pretty sure that there is no verb to describe the action of describing something in terms of parameters in UK English. I.e. no parameterise I certainly can't find a dictionary with that in it. |

FYI, UK and US will soon have seperate dictionaries. It's a precanned thingy, so much of this topic is moot

Will there be a dictionary encompassing both UK and US spellings?
That would be my preferred option, this being a world wide web.... _________________ I'm a gentleman. You're a gentleman. Who'll feed the pigs? |

For English, there will be US, UK, and Canadian dictionaries. How do you like 'dem apples You can spell "color" with a "u" to your heart's content I already have the basics working on my development machine. What I need to finish up is if say you are a Brit going to an American site and want to use the UK dictionary instead of the site default US one. I need to figure out if I want to do it via cookie, a profile setting, or by having folks register a spellingcow account.
I already have it working (on my dev box) for Brits going to a UK site

So long as the user has a choice of dictionaries, I don't suppose it matters much.
I'm all for giving people choices.
It's starting to sound awfully complicated, though.... _________________ I'm a gentleman. You're a gentleman. Who'll feed the pigs? |

It's a very nice piece of kit. However, I'd appreciate it if you'd remove the word 'offencive' from the UK dictionary. It's true that the UK spelling of 'offense' is 'offence', but 'offensive' is spelt the same. 'Offencive' doesn't exist. _________________ I'm a gentleman. You're a gentleman. Who'll feed the pigs? |
